Beading and spiritual awareness grew with the strength of an oak tree.
Hello everyone! I am Jenny and beading has been my passion since I purchased my first loom at a Pow Wow in Grand Rapids, MI in 1992. In my years of traveling the Pow Wow circuit with my daughter, beading and spiritual awareness grew with the strength of an old oak tree. The roots ran deep and the branches reached high with an ancient and primal inner guidance to create.
As the years passed my looms grew larger and my work surpassed that of jewelry and traditional designs and products. In 2007, Chandler Kinchla received his first guitar strap, being the debut of my work on stage. It was 2017 when Oteil Burbridge and I first connected, and the rest as they say is history. In my Limelight photo gallery you'll see some of the well known musicians I have created for.
Whether I’m creating a guitar strap, cuff, hat band, tapestry, bag, or something completely new, the deep dive into sharing is a sacred experience I treasure with each client. In order to weave the story of an individual there is trust that must be established, an ability to listen (which I brushed up on extensively in my college years and all those psychology classes), and a nurturing nature as I guide the narrative into visual representation. It is an honor each time I am able to speak in beads and share the precious, courageous and unique tale of all those I create for.
You’ll soon notice that in addition to my passion to bead is my insatiable appetite for writing. Poetry and the use of words to express the relationship with my inner muse and life has been a part of me as long as I have been able to spell. In fact, I still have the old poems my grandmother and I would exchange from as early as grade 4. The details of the my road less traveled are eloquently described in my book, Speaking In Beads
Whether the initial conversation about future costume work begins here, or on my Instagram account, the experience we share will be as memorable and long lasting as the gorgeous piece of beadwork that you will cherish all your days.

ABOUT AUTHOR & ARTIST JENNY SHUMAN A Midwest girl, Jenny grew up in a loving home with artistic encouragement. In 1992, her daughter, Julia turned one year old and she purchased her first loom. While many of her friends moved away after high school to travel with the Dead, she stayed home to raise her little girl, finish high school, and dive into beadwork. Her beading education flourished when she joined the Pow Wow circuit and traveled all over Michigan. Julia danced at traditional Pow Wows while Jenny sold beadwork and developed an inseparable connection between the spirit and the practice of beading. The similarity and interrelatedness of what it meant to be a Deadhead to the community of Pow Wow showed Jenny both worlds are rooted in music as a guide to deeper spiritual connection along with a profound community experience. These ideas resonated in her beading practice and she has cultivated an ability to translate personal stories to life through images. Jenny speaks in beads and plays a unique role in the flow of energy between the musicians and the crowd which is woven into the talismans worn on stage. Over the years, her looms expanded as did her fluency with design. In 2006, Chandler Kinchla of Blues Traveler performed with his first of four straps Jenny has made for him, all custom pieces that he wears to this day. It wasn't until 2017 that her work would again be under the bright lights of the big stage when Oteil Burbridge received his first two straps. A close friendship bloomed, as did the reputation of Jenny’s straps as he played in front of hundreds of thousands of Grateful Dead fans. She was soon commissioned to create straps for Bob Weir, Duane Betts, Neal Casal, and Anders Osborne, just to name a few. Jenny has also made straps for historic instruments such as Jerry Garcia's Wolf, Alligator, and his acoustic Martin, as well as Lesh's basses including the beautiful Mission Control. “Please join me in celebrating the way millions of beads come together to create a living artifact in my well-written, beautiful book.” – Jenny Shuman IMPORTANT LINKS: WEBSITE: beadworkbyjenny.net INSTAGRAM: @beadworkbyjenny ORDER THE BOOK, SPEAKING IN BEADS HERE: https://beadworkbyjenny.net/shop
